Shanghai
had a population of 13.27 million by the end of 2001, representing
1.1% of China's total. The average population density in the city
stands at 2,093 people per square kilometer, but the figure is 2,363
in the urban area. The city registered a negative population growth
rate in 1993 for the first time. Shanghai's natural population growth
rate was -2.7 per thousand in 2001, with the birth rate reaching 4.4
per thousand and mortality rate 7.1 per thousand. By the end of 2001,
Pudong New Area had 620,817 households and a population of 1.68 million.
The average population density in the area stands at 3,158 people
per square kilometer. The Area's natural population growth rate was
-2.36 per thousand in 2001, with the birth rate reaching 4.46 per
thousand and mortality rate 6.82 per thousand. With a pleasant northern
subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons,
generous sunshine and abundant rainfall. Compared with the summer and winter,
its spring and autumn are relatively short. The average annual temperature is
16 degrees and the non-frost season lasts as long as 230 days a year. It
receives an average annual rainfall of 1,200 millimeters. However, nearly 60%
of the precipitation comes during the May-September flood season, which is
divided into three rainy periods, namely, the Spring Rains, the Plum Rains
