Competitiveness of Pudong

The development of Pudong is part of the national economic development strategy.

Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China’s policy of reform and opening to the outside world, initiated and promoted the development program of Pudong. The Central Government has made this program an important strategic move in China’s economic and social development. Jiang Zemin, has reiterated at the 15th National Congress of CPC that further efforts will be devoted to making the development of Special Economic Zones and Pudong New Area a success so that they will play an exemplary, inspiring and spearheading role before the rest of the country.

Superior geographic location in national terms

Pudong New Area is located mid-point along China’s coastline at the estuary of the Yangtze River. Lying just across a river from the highly developed downtown Shanghai, it is backed by the fertile Yangtze Delta. The land area of the Delta and the whole Yangtze Valley is one fourth of the total territory of China while in population and GDP terms it is one third of that of the whole country respectively.

Good geographic location in global terms

Facing the Pacific Ocean, Pudong can, so to say, sweep its eyes over the economically most developed countries and regions in Asia. Such a position has in turn made Pudong a window on China to the rest of the world and the gateway of foreign investors to the China market.

Convenient transportation

Shanghai boasts an excellent harbor and convenient railway and highway networks. The Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao Airport links up Shanghai with the rest of the world. Direct flight can be made from Shanghai to the scores of major world cities like Paris and New York.

Well-trained human resources

Shanghai boasts over 50 institutions of higher education, some 4,000 research institutes and close to one million professionals and technical people. Even the ordinary workers in Shanghai are also known for their comparatively high quality and skillfulness.
